Kyle McCreight, a 4-time contestant on the popular TV show 'American Ninja Warrior', is not ready to hang up his ninja gear just yet. At 38 years old, he has already achieved a remarkable feat by making it to the semifinals in seasons 14, 16, and 17, and is on the cusp of reaching the national finals for the second consecutive year. However, his journey to the top was not without challenges. During the Eastern Regional Finals in Las Vegas, a muscle 'flash pump' eliminated him from the competition, leaving him with a bitter taste in his mouth.
What makes McCreight's story truly inspiring is his dedication to using his platform for a greater cause. As an occupational therapist at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, he works with kids, especially those with sensory processing disorders, including ADHD and Autism. He has even incorporated his therapy background into the therapy by taking kids to a ninja gym and setting up courses, a program he calls Sunshine Ninja Therapy. This initiative not only teaches kids sensory integration, problem-solving, and teamwork but also provides health benefits for joints, strength, and coordination.
McCreight's passion for working with kids is evident in his personal life as well. He has been volunteering with the Never Say Never Foundation, which hosts the annual Pirate Camp in Clearwater, to raise funds for prosthetics and equipment for limb-different children. His journey with the foundation began with his dog Tre, who had his leg amputated as a puppy. McCreight, an occupational therapist, helped Tre learn to walk and balance on his three legs, even leading him to become certified as a therapy dog during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their companionship is a 'perfect match', with Tre often recognized more often than McCreight himself.
Despite his age and the challenges he faces in training, McCreight remains determined to continue his journey on 'American Ninja Warrior'. He plans to start focusing on the next generation soon, ensuring he has the basics down and his cardio performance in top shape. He understands that his body may not be as resilient as it once was, but he is determined to keep pushing forward. As he prepares for the next season, McCreight's story serves as a powerful reminder that age is just a number and that determination and perseverance can overcome any obstacle.
